Class Blog May 21st - 31st

Last week we started building catapults for our engineering unit in Science. We used what we have learned about used leavers. We also looked back at the 7 steps of being an engineer. This helped us to remember to research catapults before we started building. Some of us even took notes and drew diagrams. After that we designed, tested and redesigned our catapults to see if they solved our problem.

In gym and Math we have been doing our class olympics. We have been using measurement to help us record our results. The first event that we did was the standing long jump and after that we did our running long jump. For both of these events we recorded our results to the nearest centimeter. Then we did a 75 m sprint. We used seconds to record our results for this event. the final events we did this week were a botchi ball shot put, where we used cm and a tennis ball throw which we recorded in meters.

We have been doing art about some of the countries that we have been researching. To represent China we did a traditional Chinese landscape. We included shading and perspective to make our picture look real. We used water colour paints which we layered to give them texture. To represent Egypt we have started to design our own Egyptian creatures. We used the heads of an animal from Egypt and put them on a human body just like one of the legends that we read in class.

In Language Arts we are reading our new class novel, The Name of This Book is Secret. We have been using strategies such as visualizing, connecting and code breaking to help us better understand the novel.

Finally, we have continued to design our slide show presentation for the countries that we have been researching. We are going to be doing a 3-5 minute presentation about our countries in front of the class and we are making a visual presentation to support our speeches. Our slides need to have pictures and words and we are even making notes to help us remember our speeches.

The starred questions are meant for the grade 4's and the non starred questions are what the grade 3 and 4's are meant to be working on this year.

April 16

Good morning everyone, I just wanted to remind everyone that we are having our first Google Meet tomorrow at 11 am. If you have not been able to log onto Google Classroom please contact me and I will try to help out however I can. To get onto Google Classroom log onto your student email in the same way that you would get onto Google Docs at school. I should have sent you a class invite. Remember this week we are using Raz Kids for Reading and Prodigy for Math and it would be wonderful if you were practicing your multiplication facts. Grade 3's need to know up to 5 x 5 and the grade 4's need to know up to 7 x 7. We will be using these skills next week when we begin using Google Classroom. Have a great day.

April 14 - 17th Math

Hello, This week for Math we will be using Prodigy  prodigygame . Prodigy is a Maths game where students answer math questions in order to cast spells and collect points. I have assigned questions related to Math concepts that we have covered in class. Once those questions have been answered the program chooses appropriate additional questions based on the students ability level. It is important not to give too much support when students are answering the questions otherwise the program will continue to give out even more challenging questions.  How to help If you notice that they are having trouble with a questions, let them answer but then show them on a piece of paper either what the question is asking or how you might solve the problem. Also near the top of the question there is a prompt button that will give a clue and some math tools such as pens and 100 charts that can also support them. To prepare for next week please practice Multiplication facts with your c
