January 20th - 25th

This week Mr. Pressey asked us to be an illustrator for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We added lots of detail and did our best colouring when we drew a picture of the moment when Charlie first walks into the amazing Chocolate Room. We are half way through the book and so far we are loving it!

Question: Ask me to describe the picture that I am imagining when I read at home.

In math we started to look at think boards so that we can solve tricky two-digit multiplication. First we need to estimate so we can find out what the answer should be close to. We also learned a new strategy called column multiplication. This is the strategy that most parents learned as kids. Using a known fact is kind of tricky but it will make it easy to do multiplication in our heads.

Question: Ask me to estimate and then solve 37 x 5

Also in math this week we were practicing our four times tables. We learned that our palms have a finger bone in them and so we can just count all four bones in each finger to do our times tables, thanks Mr. Bones. Another strategy for our four times tables is to just double our two times tables.

Question: Ask me any of my four times tables.
Ask me to show you the trick we learned for 4 x 9.

In gym we have still been practicing badminton. We are getting better at serving and returning the birdie to our partners with accuracy. Some of us have even been challenging ourselves to see how many times we can hit it back and forth without dropping the birdie.

Question: Ask me to show you how to serve.

We are continuing to study about Canada in Social Studies. We started to learn about Canadian animals. First we brainstormed questions to help guide our animal research. Then we got into buddies and chose some Canadian animals that we wanted to learn about. Finally we went onto Learn Alberta to find websites at our level and we recorded some facts about the animals on our mind maps.

Question: Ask me to show you some of the websites that we are using to find information.

April 16

Good morning everyone, I just wanted to remind everyone that we are having our first Google Meet tomorrow at 11 am. If you have not been able to log onto Google Classroom please contact me and I will try to help out however I can. To get onto Google Classroom log onto your student email in the same way that you would get onto Google Docs at school. I should have sent you a class invite. Remember this week we are using Raz Kids for Reading and Prodigy for Math and it would be wonderful if you were practicing your multiplication facts. Grade 3's need to know up to 5 x 5 and the grade 4's need to know up to 7 x 7. We will be using these skills next week when we begin using Google Classroom. Have a great day.

April 14 - 17th Math

Hello, This week for Math we will be using Prodigy  prodigygame . Prodigy is a Maths game where students answer math questions in order to cast spells and collect points. I have assigned questions related to Math concepts that we have covered in class. Once those questions have been answered the program chooses appropriate additional questions based on the students ability level. It is important not to give too much support when students are answering the questions otherwise the program will continue to give out even more challenging questions.  How to help If you notice that they are having trouble with a questions, let them answer but then show them on a piece of paper either what the question is asking or how you might solve the problem. Also near the top of the question there is a prompt button that will give a clue and some math tools such as pens and 100 charts that can also support them. To prepare for next week please practice Multiplication facts with your c
