February 25th - 28th

This week we started working like engineers. We were exploring how shapes and materials made structures stronger. We did an experiment where we tested the strength of materials that we will use to build our bridges. We discovered that even though string and pipe cleaners were flexible they were also really strong. Later in the week we did an experiment that taught us that corrugated materials and arches were much stronger than flat bridges. Finally on Thursday we did an experiment that involved different columns. We found out that cylindrical columns were stronger than triangular or rectangular prisms because the weight is spread out evenly.

We started reading a new novel in the mornings. We are now reading I Survived the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. The story is about a boy who was growing up during the California Gold Rush. Lots of the kids in the class signed out other I Survived books from the library this week.

On Monday we have an expert coming into talk to us about the engineering process and how they approached building a bridge while at the U of C.

Here is some extra homework for people to try this weekend.

April 16

Good morning everyone, I just wanted to remind everyone that we are having our first Google Meet tomorrow at 11 am. If you have not been able to log onto Google Classroom please contact me and I will try to help out however I can. To get onto Google Classroom log onto your student email in the same way that you would get onto Google Docs at school. I should have sent you a class invite. Remember this week we are using Raz Kids for Reading and Prodigy for Math and it would be wonderful if you were practicing your multiplication facts. Grade 3's need to know up to 5 x 5 and the grade 4's need to know up to 7 x 7. We will be using these skills next week when we begin using Google Classroom. Have a great day.

April 14 - 17th Math

Hello, This week for Math we will be using Prodigy  prodigygame . Prodigy is a Maths game where students answer math questions in order to cast spells and collect points. I have assigned questions related to Math concepts that we have covered in class. Once those questions have been answered the program chooses appropriate additional questions based on the students ability level. It is important not to give too much support when students are answering the questions otherwise the program will continue to give out even more challenging questions.  How to help If you notice that they are having trouble with a questions, let them answer but then show them on a piece of paper either what the question is asking or how you might solve the problem. Also near the top of the question there is a prompt button that will give a clue and some math tools such as pens and 100 charts that can also support them. To prepare for next week please practice Multiplication facts with your c
