We started this past week with a special guest. Jarad came back to our school and taught us more skills related to Aussie rules football. We learned to pass back and forth using hand passes and how to kick goals.
We have started learning how to write a narrative story called a defeating fear story. This is a story where the main character has to overcome their fear to help someone. Mr Pressey has been using a story called Skeleton Meets the Mummy to learn all of the parts of the story. Then we have been practicing remembering the story and repeating it back using pictures to help us remember. Our goal is to write our own stories and to share them with our kindergarten buddies next month.
During Math we have been learning all about place value. We have been exploring how numbers change and some numbers stay the same when we add and subtract different numbers from different place value spots. We also use think boards to help us represent numbers in various ways. Here is a great link to learn more about understanding place value from Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/math/early-math/cc-early-math-add-sub-100/cc-early-math-add-ones-tens/v/understanding-place-value-while-adding-tens
We took some more sketch notes about plants during Science. This time we learned about seeds. We noticed how plants use flowers and nectar to attract bees so they can be pollinators. Once seeds are created in the plant spreads them in order to complete the life cycle.
We spent lots of time this week learning about how Terry Fox demonstrated goal-setting, perseverance and citizenship in order to help many people to overcome cancer. This wonderful person is a role model to many people and every year people from all over Canada take time to celebrate Terry and to raise money for this important cause. On Friday, we did our Terry Fox run. The weather was not the best but we demonstrated perseverance just like Terry. Here is a video link if you want to learn more about Terry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BzyHYZgMz8 .
Thank you to all of the parents who have been supporting their children by helping them during our home reading program. There has been such an outstanding response from our students.
