April 14 - April 17 Reading

Hello Families,

I forgot to include in the email that the class user name is mrpressey2020

For this week, please log into Raz-kids and support your learner in reading for 30 minutes a day.

When reading on Raz-kids with your learner

1) Choose a book together

  • The level has been preset, please make sure that the book your child is reading is appropriate for them.
2) The books can be listened to
  • Raz-kids' books can be listened to but also encourage your child to read the books either to themselves or out loud to your.
  • Sit in a comfortable position.
  • When listening to a book headphones can help with focus and to minimize noise.
3) When learners read their books out loud to an adult
  • Listen to your child read some, half, most, or all of the book to you.
  • Offer support for figuring out unknown words but also let them try their decoding skills first.
  • Discuss the book and make connections.
4) Learners take the tests
  • Watch your learner take the tests.
  • Help clarify the questions and explain misconceptions at the end.
Reading should be enjoyable, enjoy the conversations with your child.

Remember the kind of questions that can be asked following reading are the same kinds of questions that can help children better understand shows, movies and the world.

Please email me if you have any questions about Raz-kids.

Also, Students can access/sign out e-books at the Calgary Public Library using their CBE username and the password 1234567.

April 16

Good morning everyone, I just wanted to remind everyone that we are having our first Google Meet tomorrow at 11 am. If you have not been able to log onto Google Classroom please contact me and I will try to help out however I can. To get onto Google Classroom log onto your student email in the same way that you would get onto Google Docs at school. I should have sent you a class invite. Remember this week we are using Raz Kids for Reading and Prodigy for Math and it would be wonderful if you were practicing your multiplication facts. Grade 3's need to know up to 5 x 5 and the grade 4's need to know up to 7 x 7. We will be using these skills next week when we begin using Google Classroom. Have a great day.

It is important not to give too much support when students are answering the questions otherwise the program will continue to give out even more challenging questions.  How to help If you notice that they are having trouble with a questions, let them answer but then show them on a piece of paper either what the question is asking or how you might solve the problem. Also near the top of the question there is a prompt button that will give a clue and some math tools such as pens and 100 charts that can also support them. To prepare for next week please practice Multiplication facts with your c
