Mr. Pressey

One thing that we started was a class deal that if we get twenty marbles we get a class bonus. If we help others or are kind. If we show good leadership and respect then Mr. Pressey will give us a marble. Once we get enough we will vote on an activity. During Social Studies we continued to do animal research on mind maps. Last we we brainstormed questions to help guide our research. This week we used our mind map note taking to take notes about the food, body, habitat and life cycle of different Canadian animals. We started playing badminton in gym we learned how to serve and pass back and forth and we counted to see how many passes we could do before it hits the floor. January 20th - 25th This week Mr. Pressey asked us to be an illustrator for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We added lots of detail and did our best colouring when we drew a picture of the moment when Charlie first walks into the amazing Chocolate Room. We are half way through the book and so far we are loving it! Question: Ask me to describe the picture that I am imagining when I read at home. In math we started to look at think boards so that we can solve tricky two-digit multiplication. First we need to estimate so we can find out what the answer should be close to. We also learned a new strategy called column multiplication. This is the strategy that most parents learned as kids. Using a known fact is kind of tricky but it will make it easy to do multiplication in our heads. January 14- 18 This week we started playing the recorder with Mr. Katchur. We learned how to play the B note. We started to learn about the 5 rules for playing the recorder. We needed to remember the Tim Horton's fingers, where we press hard enough that we make little donuts on our fingers. Earlier in the week we began to learn about Canada in Social Studies. We started by writing down everything that we knew about Canada already. Next we brainstormed questions that we could use to help our research of geographic features. The next day we got into partners and we used google to help us research the answers and put the information onto mind maps. In Math we started to look at multiplication think boards. This week we voted on our new class novel. We are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have already read 4 chapters. It is about a poor boy named Charlie who lives next to a chocolate factory run by a man named Willy Wonka. We have started our new Science unit about building and using different materials. On Thursday we used about 5 different materials and built a bridge that needed to hold as many rulers as possible. Today we had a challenge to build a dome out of straw, string, pipe cleaners and tape that needed to hold up a visual journal. Also we are going to present a poem for the class next Friday. Mr. Pressey put a bunch of poems around the class and we chose one we liked. We need to read with expression, look at the audience, use body language and try to remember it.

This week we went and visited our kindergarten buddies and did some art. We made reindeers out of popsicle sticks. The hard part was gluing the popsicle sticks because it was hard making them even. Another tricky part was also putting on the antlers because sometimes our buddies struggled twisting them. We continued learning about multiplication by practicing the easiest and most important times table, the fives. We practiced counting by fives to get faster. We are trying to get so good that we just know the facts without counting by fives. Someone also realized that we can sometimes count by tens to do this too or half a number that is multiplied by ten. The other day we made Tinfoil Men/ Tinfoil People. It was an art project that helped us learn more about light and shadow. It was used to teach us how an opaque object blocks light and makes shadows. We have been doing lots with Art and Science lately.  We read a story called Snowmen at Night and that inspired us to do an Art project. We used oil pastels to make a snowman and some paper towels to smudge the pastels. We shaded the edges to make it look 3D and we included a shadow because we are learning about light and shadows in Science. We have also been starting to learn about multiplication. We have been doing multiplication thinkboards to practice lots of strategies to solve problems like arrays, 100 charts. drawings, repeated addition and using known facts.We have been practice our 2 and 3 times tables when we do 2 minute math. We have also been playing some math games. Our Winter Concert is at 4:45 - 6pm on Thursday December 20th. We have been practicing dancing with 3 Left Feet.

November 16th This week we learned soooooo much about the ear. We learned about the 3 main parts of the ear. It may sound weird but learning about the ear was really interesting. We learned that their are 3 small bones in your ear called ossicles. We learned all about the ear while we practiced taking notes and writing a paragraph, with an introductory sentence, in our own words so we wont get expelled from university. In math, we have been studying about subtraction. We started learning which words and phrases meant addition or subtraction when we get word problems. Some examples of subtraction phrases are how many more, how many are left, remain, how much more and difference. During our math switch groups some of us were learning about money and adding coins. Some of us were learning about roman numerals and we also played a game were we skip counted to practice our multiples of 3's, 5's and 6's.
